By Valeo FC Girls, 04/03/19, 3:30PM EDT

Newton, Ma. : Marijke Terhorst from the Valeo FC Power ’07 has been selected to represent Massachusetts in the Olympic Development Program (ODP) for the 2018 – 2019 season.

Marijke will compete on the Massachusetts ODP squad alongside her Valeo Power teammate Molly, who was featured in last week’s player spotlight. Both Marijke and Molly will compete amongst the top players in the region and be evaluated for future regional and national opportunities.

The Olympic Development Program (ODP), according to the US Youth Soccer website:

“The US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program was formed in 1977 to identify a pool of players in each age group from which a National Team will be selected for international competition; to provide high-level training to benefit and enhance the development of players at all levels; and, through the use of carefully selected and licensed coaches, develop a mechanism for the exchange of ideas and curriculum to improve all levels of coaching.

From 1982 until the present, international events for youth national teams have increased substantially and the US Youth Soccer ODP has kept pace by instituting trials and player pools for five age groups in the boys' program, and five age groups in the girls' program.”

In order to be selected for ODP, Marijke was identified amongst one of the top players in the state with in her age group. As part of ODP selection process, players are identified and evaluated based on the four stages of player development:

  • Technical
  • Tactical
  • Fitness & Athletic Ability
  • Psychological / Attitude

As part of Marijke’s process in making the ODP squad, Marijke was invited, identified and selected during the National US Youth Coaching session that took place in Massachusetts last fall. Marijke may be the youngest member on the ODP squad, but that will not hinder her from competing at the highest of levels and showcasing her talents an elite player in the state.

Congratulations again to Marijke and Molly on a great accomplishment! Continue to keep up the great work!
